LONG WALKS IN SANTIAGO

Region Metropolitana, Central Chile

Begin about noon in the square outside Cal y Canto subway station. Enjoy the facade of the station, once a train station and now a cultural center, then you can try a terremoto (white wine with a spoon of ice cream) in La Piojera, further on you will surely inmmerse in the mood. A square to the east through Balmaceda Avenue is the Central Market, a noisy seafood market. After crossing that, you leave through Pase Puente until getting to the Main Square, which is surrounded by colonial and neoclassical buildings. These include Catedral Metropolitana and the main Post Office which was built in 1882 over the place of the first house of the city, which belonged to Pedro de Valdivia. Walk around the square and then you can take the roat to the west by Compañía, which extends between two neoclassical buildings: The Ex National Congress and the Court of Justice. Turn to your left I Morandé and walk along one block to the landscaped Plaza de la Constitución, which includes a statue that commemorates president Salvador Allende.  He died on the 1973 coup d'état in the presidential palace, Palacio de la Moneda, it can be seen on the south of the square. Walk through other big square on the south ide of the palace, Plaza de la Ciudadanía, and turn to the east along the chaotic Alameda, main central artery of Santiago. Seven blocks forward you walk through the monumental Biblioteca Nacional, which has a beautiful classic façade, and then you will get to the entrance of Terraza neptuno of Santa Lucia hill, from the top where many sights to downtown exist. Go through the north exit and walk through JM de la Barra and you will compensate your efforts in one of the numerous café or you can lay down and enjoy the grass of Parque Forestal
