Valdivia

Región de Los Ríos
Lake District

The capital city of the Los Ríos region was founded by the Spanish as a stronghold for the war in 1552. In the 17th century, it was conquered by the Dutch, only to be later recovered. Its importance at that time was due to its strategic location along the river, with the Pacific Ocean 20 km away. In the 19th century, German immigrants began arriving, encouraging the increasing development it has seen, despite suffering a severe earthquake and tsunami in 1960.

Valdivia is a unique city in a diverse natural setting. All distances within the city are short and the architecture is fascinating as the design of the buildings is made so as to resist wind and rain. There is a variety of good local beers and restaurants offering German style barbecue. It is advisable to take a trip along the river where you can see huge sea lions and see the remains of houses that collapsed during the massive tsunami, giving a new shape to the landscape.
