Chilean AltiplanoRegión de Arica
Route 11 will take you to the Andean highlands. The first destination is the green Lluta Valley, where you will find a great variety of petroglyphs on the lowest hills, after crossing a stretch of the desert 100 km (62 miles) from Arica with pre-Columbian ruins such as the Copaquilla Pukara and the tambo of Zapahuira, which are visible from the highway. The area is strongly influenced by the Aymara culture. The small towns located along the valley are surrounded by cultivation terraces, and it is clear that this zone was part of Peru until relatively recently. Further up we can admire the spectacular landscape featuring unique flora and fauna, along with one of the highest lakes in the world and forests.
