Antofagasta
Región de AntofagastaAtacama Desert
Antofagasta has a population of 255,000 inhabitants and is located on the north coast of the country, 1,361 km from Santiago. It is famous for its pleasant climate and nearly permanent sunshine.
The splendid national monuments that it possesses reflect its important historic past. In Barrio Histórico, you can admire many of them, such as the Nitrates Dock, the former Maritime Authority building and the former Customs House.
Currently, the main cultural and economic activities of the North of Chile are concentrated here. This is largely due to it being the port of embarkation for the copper mined at the biggest mines in the world: Chuquicamata and La Escondida.
If you travel north along the coastal road, you will get to La Portada de Antofagasta and on the way you will see the fishing terminal and a number of beaches. Further to the north you find resorts like Mejillones.
The tourist attractions of the city are varied and offer excellent service: restaurants, pubs, handicraft fairs, etc.
